Sheaves For Christ Fundraising Ideas

Ministers of the Alabama District:

 Last year the District Youth Committee asked me for some ideas of what we do in Dothan to raise money for Sheaves For Christ.  After mentioning some of these items to them, I was asked to compile a list and to give more information on some of the things we do to raise money and to present this to the pastors, churches, and youth leaders of the Alabama District to help you in your fundraising efforts.

 This not an exhaustive list,  just some of our regular fundraising events that we do every year.  Some of the events may not be suited for your specific church or in your specific area, but try each of them and see what works and what doesn’t.  Some of these events can be done in tandem with other churches in your local area or in tandem with other events.

If you would like more information contact me at (334)671-4102 or (334)333-3697.  You can also contact me via email at revdog@gmail.com or david.goodwin@mwarep.org .

Thank you for your support of SFC and the young people of the Alabama District.

In His Service,  David Goodwin Section 8 Youth Director

*       BBQ Dinners

*       Have the saints sell plates in advance at work, school, and local businesses.

*       Make sure to collect the money in advance.

*       Have a crew to cook potato salad, baked beans, and of course the meat!

*       Have a few of the ladies bake/buy pound cakes.

*       Have a crew to assemble the plates for delivery.

*       Have a few people to deliver the plates

*       Golf Tournament (or any other type of tournament)

*       You can have this at a local par-3 or a larger course it is up to you.  Dothan uses a par-3 course that donates the course for the tournament.

*       Have someone to go around to local businesses and have them sell hole sponsorships for $50 - $150 or let them have the hole exclusively for a larger donation (say $250).

*       Have someone to call local restaurants  to donate gift certificates to be given to the closest to the pin winners and the winners of each flight.   If you have enough gift certificates at the end of the tournament you can auction those off to the highest bidder

*       Have someone prepared to have food  for sale if the course doesn’t offer food.

*       Charge a cost per person to enter the tournament and make it a 2 or 3 man scramble.  Set your entry fee cost equivalent to the quality and prestige of the course you are playing on.

*       Century Club

*       Pass out slips for Century Club pledges at the beginning of the SFC drive in April (these can be downloaded at www.jointhesfcstory.com).

*       Have families pledge $100 to SFC.  This can be paid in one lump sum, monthly at $20 a month, or weekly at $5 a week.  Some families may even consider each member of the family pledging $100

*       Give regular updates to the individuals as to the amount they have paid of their pledge

*       At the end of the SFC drive have the names of those families that kept their pledge engraved on a plaque and placed on the wall in the church for all to see.

*       Car Washes

*       Try to have these in a highly visible location

*       Make sure the youth/saints are supervised at all times, you don’t want to be sued over damage to a car.

*       Ask for donations only...sometimes you will get a $2.00 donation on a really dirty car, but other times you will get $20.00 for a car that had just been washed the day before.  If you ask for $5...that’s all you will get!

*       After Service Dinners

*       These have been big money makers for years.  Every other week a different family or families are assigned to prepare an after service dinner for Sunday night.  The menu is up to them.  Word to the wise...keep it simple...the more costly the meal...the less money.

*       The typical meal are items like spaghetti, tacos, hamburgers, hotdogs, chili, sloppy joe’s, nachos, pizza, and other quick meals.

*       If it is possible have the family/families preparing the meal to donate the cost of the meal and not receive a reimbursement.

*       Set the cost of the meal at a reasonable amount.  Don’t charge $7 for 2 taco’s and a 10oz Coke that they could get for $3 at Taco Bell.

*       Picture Sales

*       There are several companies that will offer to come to your church and take family portraits for $5 or $10.  These companies will give you a bonus for selling a certain amount of pictures and an even higher bonus for going over that amount.

*       These companies make their money of the sale of addition portraits that they sell, but you are not obligated to purchase anything above your original portrait purchase.  These companies can be found on the internet.

*       Auction

*       This is a major undertaking, but it is fun and a great way to make some money.

*       You will need to have an auction coordinator that spends time calling local business to donate items for auction, meals, gift certificates, oil changes, dry cleaning, books, clothing, etc...The coordinator is responsible for seeing that the items are collected.

*       Have a list made up of all the items up for bid with the opening bid price (usually 40% – 50% the original value).

*       Have an auctioneer (this can just be someone to call out the items for bid and to keep up with the bidding) at the event to make the process fun.

*       Have numbers for everyone to hold up as they bid and have lots of fun getting people to bid higher and higher.

*       As stated earlier, this is a major project, if done right it is not something you can do in a month.  In Dothan, they normally start calling businesses in January and hold the auction in May.

*       For more information on this project contact Sis. Shannon Goodwin (334)671-4102 in Dothan or send an email to revdog@gmail.com

*       Walk-a-thon

*       Simple...get people to sponsor you to walk a certain number of miles.

*       A high school track or local walking trail with lots of shade are great places to have these kinds of events.

*       You can rent pavilions and put up lots of signage promoting your event.   Some people will walk by and just donate money if you are having it at a local walking trail.

*       Have plenty of water, Gatorade, chocolate, and other snack items to keep the walkers energized.   After the event is over have food prepared for the walkers

*       Bike-a-thon

*       Same concept as a walk-a-thon...only you ride bikes

*       Silent Cake Auction

*       This is a really good way to make a good sum of money in less than 20 minutes.

*       Have someone to ask the ladies (or men) of the church to bake cakes, brownies, etc...

*       This is good to do on a Sunday morning or Sunday night after church.

*       Have the cakes laid out on a table with a sheet in front of each one with the name of the baker, the type of cake, and the opening bid.  We usually set the opening bid on all items at $10.  Some of these cakes go for as much as $50 and when you have 10 cakes that can really add up.

*       Set a time limit of 20 minutes to make your bids.  It is funny to see people scrambling around to make sure they keep the highest bid on their favorite cake.

*       SFC Fun Day

*       Set up some games outside, have a “train” ride, and any other carnival type games and events that you can come up with.

*       Have food...food...and more food.

*       Sell tickets.  Each attraction costs so many tickets per the attraction.  Give away prizes at each booth for the attractions.

*       Fundraising through sales

*       Yankee Candles

*       World’s Best Chocolate

*       Rada Cutlery...etc...

*       Teen Auction

*       Auction off your teens...pastor stop smiling like that...you’re not really getting rid of them.

*       Have teens offer to do certain chores or to do general labor.   These teens will be auctioned off to the highest bidder and must perform the work assigned to them or they have to pay back the price they were auctioned for.

*       There needs to be certain stipulations as to the kinds of work that the youth will not do.

*       Talents

*       Give each person interested in participating $10 or $20.

*       Have them devise ways to make money using the $10 or $20.  As they earn money have them reinvest it and raise more money.  Give them 14 - 30 days to raise the money.  At the end of the event have them turn in the money they have raised and if no money has been raised they need to return the $10 or $20.

*       Mother’s Day (Mother of the Year)

*       Start in April promoting this event.

*       Have someone collect votes for who they think is the mother of the year.  Each vote costs $1

*       On Mother’s Day have the votes represented by balloons, homemade carnations, or other “motherly” type items.

*       The winning mother receives a dinner to a local restaurant and a gift card to Wal-mart, target, etc...and a certificate announcing her as the mother of the year.

*       Father’s Day (Father of the Year)

*       Same concept as mother of the year

*       Get That Outta My Yard

*       Calvary UPC in Mobile would put a decorated toilet in a church member’s yard and the church member had to pay $20 to have it removed.

*       They did this the year they raised the most money for SFC in the district.

*       Tithe Your Grocery Budget

*       Take one month and tithe your monthly grocery budget.  You can do this multiple months if you like.

*       If your budget is $500 per month...then tithe $50 to SFC for that month.  If you get 10 families to do this and you get $50 a month times 10 families equals $500.  Do this for 5 months and your church just turned in $2,500 for SFC.

*       One Day’s Pay

*       Give one day’s pay each month to SFC for 5 months.  This can go for full time, part time, salaried, and commissioned employees.
